Community Gardens
We have shared many memorable moments in our three community gardens.

Blue Star Marker Garden |
In 1945, National Garden Clubs, Inc. began The Blue Star Memorial Marker Program as a tribute to our veterans. The name was taken from the blue stars on flags that were displayed for each family member who was serving in the Armed Forces during World War II. Wayne Woods Garden Club’s marker was erected in 1976 in the median of the busiest intersection in King of Prussia. For many years, fearless club members carried tools and jugs of water across several lanes of heavy traffic to tend to the garden. Their courageous efforts were often rewarded with toots and whistles from passing motorists!
The marker was moved to a much safer location in 2005 when the intersection was rebuilt. Red Knock Out Roses and Spreading Spruce interspersed with American flags now surround the marker. The adjacent Best Western Inn at King of Prussia helps us to maintain our memorial garden. |

Memory Garden at Old Roberts School |
Roberts School was built by Jonathan Roberts in 1848 for the children of the families working at Croton Mill at Martin’s Dam. This historic one room schoolhouse was reconstructed in 1956 and is preserved by the Upper Merion Park and Historic Foundation. Our Memory Garden was established in 2001 with donations and matching family funds made in memory of Joyan Jones, a long time member. Shrubs and perennials were planted around the schoolhouse and a quiet seating area was created, surrounded by trees and seasonal plantings.
In the Spring of 2008, the club undertook a major replanting, adding an Ever Blooming Hydrangea, Snowball Viburnum, Mahonia, Pieris, Mountain Laurels, a Pink Dogwood and a variety of white perennials. It was a miserable day marked by freezing rain. Many times, our members sought shelter in the “Privy”, a small outbuilding on the premises. Later, we found out that our “Privy” was often inhabited by a snake! |

Bryn Mawr Rehabilitation Center Garden |
Nancy Morris, a regular volunteer at the Bryn Mawr Rehabilitation facility, is currently working with other club members to establish a garden of perennial succulents. The garden is placed in a lovely area against the Center’s greenhouse along a path leading to an archway and gazebo where it is enjoyed by all who pass by.
Contributions of plants to our newest garden are welcomed. It was rather puzzling, though, to discover that two white oval decorations had also been donated. Apparently, the geese at Bryn Mawr Rehab liked the garden so much that they decided it would be a great place to start a family! For everyone's benefit, the parents-to-be and their eggs were moved to a more suitable environment. |
